As everyone knows, the buzz phrase or word making the proverbial rounds among today’s marketers is “cloud.”
From cloud computing to cloud storage and on and on – anything with the word “cloud” attached to it gets the immediate attention of marketers. Another similar buzz-worthy word is of course “mobile,” for it too causes any good marketer to sit up and take notice.
So when news comes of something that combines both “cloud” AND “mobile” you know it has to be big news. So big that it will absolutelycause a disruption – albeit in a good way for it will change the way drivers interact with their cars and their mobile devices alike.
So what is “it”? The largest connected vehicles platform in China, set to transform the development of the country’s connected car services industry — otherwise known as the IBM Smart Driving System.
In partnership with Beijing TransWiseway Information Technology Co. Ltd., the IBM Smart Driving System will be a cloud-based platform that will offer real-time in-vehicle services to any mobile devices. Using advanced analytics the services offered will include weather alerts, traffic alerts and alternate route suggestions.
IoT meets IoV
Yet another buzz phrase making the rounds today is the Internet of Things or “IoT,” which is essentially the method by which everyday items are connected to the Internet. Well, the IBM Smart Driving System is an example of one of those everyday items (in this case an automobile) being connected to the Internet, hence the term IoV or Internet of Vehicles.
This new system will connect millions of trucks as well as tens of millions of devices and sensors from vehicles and instantly turn data that is collected into valuable information that drivers and authorities can access via the Web or through a mobile app to improve decision making.
According to Ernie Hu, vice president, Software Group, IBM Greater China Group, the IBM Smart Driving System will have an impact not only on drivers in China but the entire automobile industry as a whole.
“This effort targeted for improving in-vehicle services will make an important impact on the whole driving ecosystem in China and combining mobile and cloud technologies will drive innovation across the automotive industry.”
Zhang Tong, general manager of TransWiseway added that is all about giving the consumer they want while also adhering to government regulations.
“We are committed to embracing mobile and other advanced technologies to spearhead an enterprise transformation, aimed at delivering enhanced services to satisfy the increasing customer demands in this age of mobility,” said Tong. “This initiative is in line with the government’s objectives to improve the safety of its citizens, given the mandate that all truck companies be connected to an IoV platform in the future.”
The Internet of Vehicles Is A Business Opportunity For The Future
In the future the Internet of Things, Vehicles and People will serve as an opportunity for all businesses to deliver the products, services and ideas to their customers when they want it, where they want it, how they want it.
Much like Kevin Spacey alluded to in his recent Keynote at IBM Impact, (Paraphrase)In the future people will want to have content delivered to them when and where they want it, no longer at the mercy of the networks.
For business it is the same thing. And in the case of the more mobile, discriminant consumer, the generation of satisfied consumers means being more creative in delivering the services they desire wherever they are, even if that is amidst their commute.
