Now that I’ve officially been on Twitter for a year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the experience and share it with you.

After a mere 32 thousand tweets, I think I have this thing figured out and for those of you still learning or interested in another perspective here is mine.

5 great lessons learned from my first year on Twitter.

  1. There Is No Right Way: Some experts and self proclaimed gurus will tell you that there is a right way to use Twitter. I have determined that unless everyone has the same goals this just isn’t the case. There is a right way for YOU, and that is your way. It is your choice who to follow and what to tweet. Just know that what you put into it is what you get out of it.
  2.

  3. Most People Are Good: If Twitter serves as a sampling of the people out there then I am encouraged. Of the people that I have met and engaged with on Twitter I have found that most are really kind and overall good people. This can be seen in the social good campaigns and the overall kindness that comes with sharing and helping out others we barely know. The site has inspired me to be a better person and to be open to others opinions. However, like any community, the site has its trolls, negative Nancy’s, as well as spammers and affiliate marketers (spammers). Overall, the Twitter community is great and has contributed to making many friends on and offline.
  4.

  5. Seek and Find Inspiration: If you seek to learn, grow and be inspired then you have come to the right place. Twitter is chuck full of people providing thoughtful and inspiring content across an array of topics. Pick an interest and you will find best of breed content. In addition if you have inspiration and ideas to share, you can reach others who are seeking it. Twitter is about giving and taking through sharing, engaging, and connecting.
  6.

  7. Expand Your Horizons: Whether it is meeting new people, or learning about new ideas. There is a limitless world on Twitter to do so. If you are willing to put yourself out there just a little bit by participating and sharing, you will be exposed to an endless amount of value ( and junk LOL) that you can benefit from. Manage your time and activity wisely, again with your goals in mind, and you will not be disappointed!
  8.

  9. Best Social Platform Bar None: I’m on all of them, Google+, Facebook, LinkedIn…and they all pale in comparison to Twitter. Honestly, all of the others could go away and I wouldn’t miss it. Twitter opens up the world to its users in a way no other platform does. Build your network, your strategy, and your following and the value will be realized exponentially.

These are the lessons that I learned in my first year on perhaps the greatest place on the Internet…What did your first year look like? What did I miss?
